Radiation therapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses ionizing radiation to kill cancer cells. It most commonly uses high-energy X-rays and gamma rays, but other forms such as proton and neutron radiation are also used.
The aim of radiation therapy is to deliver a precisely measured dose of radiation to a defined tumor volume with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissues, resulting in eradication or shrinkage of the tumor.
It can be given inside or outside the body to treat both benign and malignant tumors, and may be used alone or combined with surgery and chemotherapy.
Also called Tele-radiotherapy
A radioactive source is placed inside the body or near the tumor to deliver a high dose of radiation directly to the tumor with minimal impact on surrounding tissues.
